Declare your love for the good ole USA by making this vibrant banner. Phoomph ™ for Fabric makes creating decorations fun. Recruit your kids or teens to help assemble this no-sew project.
Here’s what you will need:
Phoomph™ for Fabric, Stiff: 6 sheets.
Fabric scraps: Red, white and blue in prints and/or solids. 6 ½ x 7 ½” rectangles
Satin Ribbon, 1” wide-9” top hanger
Satin Ribbon, 1 ½” wide- 1 yard for stringing blocks
Buttons: an assortment of red, white and blue star and heart shaped buttons, small (15mm) and large (28mm)
Iron and pressing board
Glue gun and glue sticks
Marking pen or chalk
4″ Block letter stencils for U, S, A
Note: Press all fabrics before applying to Phoomph ™
1. Heart Block:
Apply a 6 1/2″ x 7 1/2″ piece of red gingham fabric to a 6″ x 7″ piece of stiff red Phoomph ™. Trim fabric to fit Phoomph ™ block.
Apply a 5″ x 5″ piece of royal blue fabric to a 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ square of stiff blue Phoomph ™. Trim fabric to fit Phoomph ™ block. Remove backing of Phoomph™ square and apply blue square to center of gingham block.
Apply a 5″ x 4″ piece of red fabric to a 5″ x 4″ piece of stiff red Phoomph™. Trace heart template to center of square and cut out heart. Remove backing of Phoomph ™ heart and apply heart to center of blue block.
2. U, S, A Blocks:
Use stiff Phoomph™ in the same color as the fabric chosen for the block.
Follow the above directions to apply red print fabric ‘U’ to blue print block, blue print fabric ‘S’ to white print block and white print ‘A’ to solid red block.
3. Finishing the Blocks:
Cut four 6 1/2″ by 7 1/2″ dark blue rectangles from blue fabric for backing on blocks.
Remove backing of Phoomph™ from heart block. Using photo of sample for guidance, place the 9″ length of 1″-wide red satin ribbon at the upper edge of the back of the block in a loop to make hanger.
Cut the 1 1/2″ wide red satin ribbon into four 7″ lengths. Refer to photo of sample and place one length of this ribbon at center of lower edge of block. Carefully place blue backing over ribbons and trim to fit Phoomph™
Follow preceding steps in this section for the remaining three U, S, A blocks.
4. Embellishing the Blocks:
Embellish the heart block with one red heart and one white star button as shown in sample.
Embellish remaining blocks with assorted red, white and blue starts and red and white hearts.
Glue buttons in place.
