This Saturday, March 16, is Worldwide Quilting Day! My guild, PMQG, organized a fun fabric shopping and sewing day last year in Portland, Oregon for National Quilting Day in 2012, but this year the celebration has gone global. “So many international quilt and fabric shops contacted me after hearing about National Quilting Day last year, and said we need to make this a worldwide event,” says Laurie Harsh, president of The Fabric Shop Network. So this time around, over two hundred quilt shops across the United States as well as in Canada, Australia, Ireland, and the UK, are participating – hosting charity quilting drives, prizes and giveaways, sales, and sewing parties. Look over the list of shops to find one near you! And you could win a grand prize of a quilter’s mystery box worth over $300, including lots of new Coats & Clark threads and sewing supplies! Be sure to enter by midnight Eastern time, March 17.

Teresa Coates, editor of WebCents magazine and communications manager for the Fabric Shop Network, has been busy organizing giveaways and events for WQD. She says, “I love seeing so many people involved in Worldwide Quilting Day! Whether someone is just learning or is on their 200th quilt, women (and men!) are coming together to celebrate an art that has a beautiful history, as well as an vibrant future. Traditional quilting is still alive and well, but there is an exciting new energy with the modern quilters and art quilters.” I asked Teresa about just a few of her favorite events she’s heard that participating shops have planned for Saturday, and here’s what she shared…

Many shops are hosting “jelly roll races” (check out this video from Missouri Quilt Company to see how it’s done) to piece lightning-fast quilt tops for the Seven Summits Strip Quilt Challenge! Each quilt top counts as 1600 inches, so 152 quilt tops completed by one shop’s quilters equals the height of Mt. McKinley, and 218 quilt tops equals the height of Mt. Everest.

  • Village Fabrics and Crafts in Paradise, Michigan, is hosting an all-day quilt-a-thon with panoramic views of Lake Superior, refreshments, and prizes.
  • Four Pines Quilting in Claremont, New Hampshire, is also giving away prizes for the fastest jelly roll racers, both individual and partners – and offering free long-arm quilting for any tops completed there on WQD!
  • And Stitchin’ Heaven in Mineola, Texas, will be holding their jelly roll races – and giving their prizes to the winners – outside on the sidewalk, so an appreciative audience can cheer the quilters on!

Meanwhile, The Quilted Crow in Lehighton, Pennsylvania, is hosting a pillowcase party for the One Million Pillowcase Challenge. Come by for drinks, snacks, demos, a free quilt pattern, and the chance to sew pillowcases for gifts or for their local children’s hospital. For every two pillowcases you sew, you’ll get a $5 gift certificate to the shop!

Happy Worldwide Quilting Day, everyone! What are you doing to celebrate this weekend?
