Sometimes we sit and wonder where we would be without the internet in our sewing. We rely so heavily on both the inspiration for a specific project and the motivation to actually complete it from the people we follow from afar. It’s amazing to see just how productive everyone is, and makes us want to keep up on our projects, too! If you’re looking for a new project to keep you active and engaged in your sewing, we’re sharing 5 great projects we found on one of our favorite creative sharing sites, Kollabora, for items that can be sewn for children.
Sewing for kids can be so fun because they’re often more receptive to bold patterns and interesting color combinations. They’re constantly growing, so sewing clothing and accessories for them is always a necessity! We also love an opportunity to decorate with sewing, and the changing personalities and interests of children are a great outlet to try something new in your sewing. Check out our four picks of projects with tutorials for sewing up items that range from decor to apparel for a little one in your life.
We LOVE hot air balloons, they just call out to our creative energy. They’re a fun opportunity for decor because they can hang elegantly from a ceiling without taking up wall space, especially if you’re looking for a new dimension in a room space. Check out this tutorial for how to create your own hot air balloon decorations using strips of fabric to create the balloon. We love them for parties, too!
Bubble skirts are so cute, and make for a super easy project to sew up. We love that you can take advantage of some of your knit fabrics, and the construction is so simple that you don’t have to worry about using any intimidating overlock stitches or a serger if you’re not there yet in your sewing skills. This one is made with a thick elastic band across the top — a great opportunity to search for some fun elastics!
3. DIY Teepee
This tutorial guides you through using an existing item (in this case a maxi dress — could also be a sheet or a large piece of purchased material) to make a super cute teepee that can be used for quiet time corners or reading nooks. With just a few simple supplies — including floss and cording — you’re on your way to the cutest teepee ever! We can see ourselves having some fun in some stenciling or applique on the exterior of the tent, and painting sticks a fun color for an extra opportunity for color. Can you see pompoms hanging from the top?
This apparel project is great for the summer, a simple romper/playsuit that has adjustable straps that make it easy to grow into. We love the combo of the large print for the main body and a smaller stripe for the details — have fun mixing and matching fabrics on this one!
