Chalkboard Mat DIY with Handmade Charlotte 1We can’t help ourselves when it comes to things that roll up for kids — the on-the-go convenience can’t be beat! We’re still fresh in school mode, with kids all over the country from elementary school to college freshly settled into the academic atmosphere. Today we are excited to share with you a tutorial for a roll-up chalkboard mat that’s perfect for little ones to practice basic handwriting, or just doodling at the dinner table. With very simple sewing skills and a set of cute stencils, you’re halfway there!

Chalkboard Mat DIY with Handmade Charlotte 2The best part of this tutorial is the very little sewing involved, so you don’t have to worry about a lengthy process while still in back-to-school mode. The Fall promises a buzz of activity, so we thought you’d enjoy a project that takes very little time, with major results. Get the kids involved in the stenciling and you have a full family activity!

Chalkboard Mat DIY with Handmade Charlotte 4This tutorial uses chalkboard fabric, a super neat material that you can find in most major fabric retailers. Select a fabric for your backing (which will show when rolled up) and snag a spool of your favorite Coats & Clark All-purpose thread. The stencils featured in this project can be found at Michaels and Jo-Ann’s stores, a new line from Handmade Charlotte. Have fun with the letters, decorating with the alphabet, your child’s name, or words of inspiration!

Chalkboard Mat DIY with Handmade Charlotte 3The great thing about this is you can alter it to the exact size you need — whether it be to fit onto a home desk, school desk, or place setting at the dinner table. Careful, though — if they bring it to school, you just might have a list of orders before the school day’s out!
