Patriotic Table Runner

With Memorial Day coming up, Flag Day on June 14th and the 4th of July not far behind, a Simple Patriotic Table Runner seems like just the right project for this week. Originally designed for the 4th of July, this quick, quilted table topper will be the perfect thing for a handmade holiday. If you’re not a quilter, give it a go anyway – the instructions are simple and I’m sure it will be fun for every sewist to make. Designer Holly’s short, easy to follow tutorial on her Bits of Everything blog will help you make your runner glorious. You may even have time to make a second topper as a gift!

The runner uses basic, blender-style fabrics in reds, whites and blues that you may even have on hand. The binding fabric Holly chose is a wonderful complement to the basic prints and solids used for the main stage of the runner. Have fun picking out your own “just right” binding! Fabric needs are few for the 16” x 46” Patriotic Table Runner and range from a fat quarter to a half yard. That makes this a budget friendly project, too! From your chosen fabrics you’ll cut squares, strips, border and binding and be ready to start sewing in no time at all.

Simple Patriotic Table Runner star

The focal stars are appliqued and Holly kindly included a link to an Applique Tutorial in case you need a little brush up on your skills. Can’t draw a star? No problem – Holly also included a star for you to print and trace onto fusible web. Wonder Under is the recommended fusible web brand, but feel free to use your favorite or what you have on hand. Goodness, what would we do without fusible web!?

Simple Patriotic Table Runner layering

I love that this tutorial includes hints for putting your layers together. The hints mysteriously involve blue painters tape, spray adhesive and curved safety pins. Sound interesting? Layers can be tricky business and a few tips from our new friend Holly are certainly welcome. Be sure to read the tutorial thoroughly if these tools don’t sound familiar!

Patriotic Table Runner Coats Quilting Thread

Your Patriotic Table Runner will be machine quilted so you’ll want three colors of Coats super-strong and lustrous Quilting Thread – red, white and blue. Totally the perfect thread to make your runner look fabulous and you can use one of these to top stitch the binding, too. If binding is a scary word, Holly has your back there, too and has included a link to a binding tutorial.

Okay, you’ve got the idea, so I’m just going to step away now. I want to make sure you have plenty of time to stitch up your Patriotic Table Runner and you should get started. Click here for the tutorial, have fun stitching and  . . . have a happy, handmade Memorial, Flag and Independence Day!
